Culture and attractions
Quality of life is a key priority in Helsingør. Therefore there are plenty of possibilities for leisure time activities within culture, sports and outdoor recreational pursuits. Kronborg Castle is the most famous historic landmark of Helsingør and is the setting for many social and cultural activities. Later this year, the old shipyard area in front of Kronborg will be renovated and redesigned to form ‘the Culture Yard' (Kulturværftet). The Culture Yard will include a new library, theatre and concert hall as well as a café, meeting and conference facilities, and a media workshop. Construction is expected to begin in the late summer of 2007 and the facility will be inaugurated in summer 2009.
Situated by the sea, Helsingør has a long coastline. The maritime touch is present in more areas than the redesign of the shipyard. The Baltic Sail maritime festival and a number of regattas take place during the summer. The shipyard is also the setting for markets with arts and crafts on display and for sale every year. Helsingør and the neighbouring municipalities have some of the best beaches in Denmark, with activities all year round.
Away from the sea there are plenty of other opportunities for recreational activities, from the beautiful forests just outside Helsingør to the many golf courses in the area.
There are three famous castles in close proximity to Helsingør and just south of Helsingør is the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Helsingør boasts a number of museums including the Museum of Aviation, and is also home to the Øresund Aquarium. There are also a variety of festivals and concerts within all genres throughout the year.
Helsingør city centre has a cosy atmosphere with many small, specialist shops, cafes and restaurants. The city also boasts a new shopping mall.
