In five years only, the number of international patent applications from Danish companies working within energy has doubled, writes the financial daily Børsen.

Experts describe the doubling as a surprisingly large increase and as an indication that Danish know-how is world leading.

The patents will allow Danish companies that, in 2007, exported energy technology worth EUR 7 billion to meet future requirements.

In a few years Danish players have doubled the number of international patent applications within environmentally sound energy sources like wind,  biomass and  waste incineration. From 48 in 2002 to 108 in 2007 writes the financial daily Børsen.

The statistics are prepared by  the Danish Patent and Trademark Office for the financial daily Børsen. As a rule approximately 90 per cent of the applications are from companies with focus on export  while the remaining 10 per cent are from universities and private inventors.

 Managing Director of  the Danish Patent and Trademark Office, Jesper Kongstad sees the increase as a clear indication of a Danish stronghold..

The energy sector is still far from for instance the pharmaceutical industry in terms of patents but according to Jesper Kongstad a doubling of patent applications is rare.
